Hope Valley Railway Update from Network Rail. May 2022

2022 so far

Earthworks have started near Sickleholme Golf Course in Bamford, as part of work to stabilise the embankment in preparation for the installation of a new railway passing loop in the autumn.

Our teams have also been working to build our main compounds in Bamford and Dore & Totley – the temporary offices and welfare units from which our teams will be based during construction work.

May, June & July 2022

At the end of May, and throughout June and July, major upgrade work will take place along the Hope Valley line.

The majority of work will take place at Dore & Totley, where our teams will be removing, replacing and adding to the railway track that is presently in place, ahead of work to build a second railway line, platform and accessible footbridge at the station later this year.

There will also be a number of railway deliveries over all weekends in June and July to transport large pieces of track through Dore & Totley station car park and onto the adjacent railway track.

Changes to passenger services

In order to ensure that these vital weekend works can be undertaken as quickly and as safely as possible, our teams will be closing Dore & Totley, Grindleford, Bamford and Hathersage stations and working around the clock on the following dates:

  • Sunday 29 May (12am) – Monday 30 May (6am)
  • Friday 1 July (11pm) – Monday 4 July (6am)
  • Friday 8 July (11pm) – Monday 11 July (6am)
  • Friday 15 July (11pm) – Monday 18 July (6am)
  • Friday 22 July (11pm) – Monday 25 July (6am)
  • Friday 29 July (11pm) – Monday 1 August (6am)

There will therefore be changes to journeys, and so we are advising passengers to plan ahead and check their journey in advance through National Rail Enquiries.

Dore & Totley car park closures

Dore & Totley station car park will also be partially and fully closed at different periods over the next three months. Alternative parking spaces will be available at Abbeydale Sports Club and local businesses will remain open and accessible throughout.

Part closures

  • Wednesday 25 (from 5am), Thursday 26, Friday 27 & Saturday 28 May and every Wednesday (from 5am), Thursday & Friday in June & July.

Full closures

  • Sunday 29 May (from 11pm Saturday). Car park reopens Monday 30 May (6am).
  • June: Every Saturday (from 5am). Car park reopens on Sundays (7am).
  • July: Every Saturday (from 11pm Friday) & Sunday. Car park reopens on Mondays (6am).

The one-way route around the car park, along with the disabled spaces and drop off point will be left clear during the partial closures. A pedestrian access route to both the station and the Rajdhani restaurant will be made available throughout.

When travelling to the station passengers are encouraged to walk, cycle or car share where possible. Alternatively, bus routes 218, 97 & 98 all pass near to Dore & Totley.

Engagement with the local community

Engagement has been ongoing with passengers and local residents in advance of the blockade weekend works and associated car park closures. Communication has come from the project team via letter drops and door knocks, press releases, social media, in-person and online briefings and through signage at the affected stations.

More widely, the project has been holding quarterly community information sessions to keep local residents informed on the progress of the scheme, and a new project app, available to download on both Android and Apple devices, has also been launched to provide regular updates on work and community initiatives.
